Part 3 of 3: Is pornography raping your brain?

The gang from the office are talking about who has most experience on a farm. One person even grew up on a farm. One person knows a girl who runs a very successful free-range chicken farm.

Then one bro pipes up, “I reverse-cowgirled her.” He was expecting lots of laughs, but that came out of nowhere. Now there’s an awkward silence as he has outed himself as a porn addict.

This is Part 3 of a 3-part series. Also check out:

Part 1: Is pornography preventing you from getting a girlfriend?

Part 2: Is pornography ruining your sex life?

All too often pornographic thoughts filter out these bros’ mouths because their brains are absolutely steeped in porn. So much so that it’s actually blocking out intelligent thought and normal conversation.

It’s not just having sex on the mind. Porn might be physically damaging your brain like a drug.

Livescience.com rounded up research on effects porn has on the brain. For one, it might literally shrink your brain.

“A 2014 study in the journal JAMA Psychiatry found men who regularly consumed porn had smaller brain volume and fewer connections in the striatum, a brain region tied to reward processing, compared with those who didn’t view porn,” the article says. According to the article, the parts of the brain that were smaller were the same as those of people who were depressed or alcoholic.

Another study they found says porn quiets the part of the brain that processes visual imagery. Researchers speculate its because the brain starts diverting blood away from the visual cortex for more ‘pressing matters’ (being turned on).

It’s an interesting article with a lot more information. The last tidbit I want to share is, porn users become less and less able to think in the long-term. They become more hooked on short-term gratification. In quitting porn, they are more able to gather the patience for a more long-term mindset.

Porn appears to work like a drug. It physically harms your brain and convinces it that it’s experiencing pleasure, while actually robbing it of all the real pleasure there is to be had in the outside world.
